Growing up in the Deep South, there are certain memories that you hold dear and there is that one day that it seems everything just slows down; Sundays. Waking up to my grandmother cooking bacon and praying that I didn’t miss her mixing the biscuit, pancake or waffle batter, (whichever had been decided for the morning) was like christmas morning every weekend. Of course, after breakfast you better hope you were ready for church when she was. There was no time to late.
Thinking back now, I would give anything in the world to hear her sing again. It may have been a little off key but it made me smile. After church, we would all go out to lunch then head home. Some afternoons, I can remember her preparing to can. The day before, we had gone out to the garden and picked what veggies she needed and some apples from the trees. The entire kitchen would be flooded from one end to the other with jar after jar as she would finish. Apple jam, apple butter, fresh made pickles from the cucumbers, tomatos, okra…. I could go on for days. The only thing I regret is not taking the extra moment to really watch how she was able to do it all, instead of sneaking a pickle or two.
Setting this scene, these are the memories I couldn’t keep from flooding in. Merak has the perfect jam season set right now at Shiny shabby that gave me the idea and story to tell. Be sure you go check it out!
Happy Sunday y’all! ❤
